What to know

Tour pricing $65-85 per person depending on operator, season, and moon phase. Duration 2-2.5 hours on water. Minimum age typically 5-6 years. Children must be accompanied by adult. Weight limits apply (check with specific operator).

Advanced reservations essential - book 1-2 weeks ahead for peak season and new moon dates. Tours depart nightly weather permitting. Cancellation policy: typically 24-48 hours for full refund; no-shows forfeit payment.

Getting to Vieques: Ferry from Ceiba ($2-4 one-way, 1 hour crossing) or flights from San Juan on Vieques Air Link or Cape Air ($60-120 one-way, 10 minutes). Overnight stay on Vieques highly recommended. Rental cars, taxis, and bikes available on island.

What to bring: water shoes/secure sandals, towel, insect repellent, waterproof bag for phone, drinking water, windbreaker. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet. New moon periods (darkest nights) offer best visibility. Full moon tours still operate but with reduced glow visibility.

Note: Vieques bio bay is protected - only clear kayaks and electric boats permitted (no gas motors or disposable plastics allowed).

More details

Kayak through the world's brightest bioluminescent bay - Vieques' Mosquito Bay, officially recognized by Guinness World Records and protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This natural wonder contains the highest concentration of bioluminescent dinoflagellates on Earth, creating an unparalleled glow-in-the-dark experience that surpasses all other bio bays.

The tour begins with a short orientation and paddle to the mangrove channels leading to Mosquito Bay. As you enter the bay after dark, the water erupts in brilliant blue-green light with every paddle stroke, fish movement, and splash. The glow is so intense on clear, dark nights that you can see your entire kayak outlined in light. Swimming is permitted, allowing you to create swirls of bioluminescence with your hands and watch your body glow.

Included in your tour: tandem or single kayak, life jacket, paddles, waterproof bags, experienced guide, and snacks/water. Tours run nightly departing from Esperanza village on Vieques Island. Getting to Vieques requires a ferry from Ceiba (1 hour) or small plane from San Juan (10 minutes) - plan to stay overnight on Vieques for the full experience.

This is considered THE premier bioluminescent bay experience in Puerto Rico and one of the top natural wonders in the Caribbean. Best experienced during new moon phases for maximum darkness.
